My personal life & business column — a mix of life moments, investing insights, and reflections on long-term wealth building.
Every investment is about numbers. But not all numbers are good for you. Some help you make smart decisions. Others mess with your head and quietly destroy your results.
Today, I want to talk about toxic numbers — the kind that pull your attention away from what real investing is supposed to be.
🎭 Two Different Worlds
Over the past decade, the world of investing has split in two.
There’s the investment industry — focused on business, profits, cash flow, and long-term wealth.
And then there’s the investment entertainment industry — focused on headlines, emotions, trading signals, and instant dopamine hits.
The first builds wealth. The second sells tickets to a rollercoaster called “easy money.”
🎢 The Investment Amusement Park
That second world is like an amusement park. You buy a ticket, grab your popcorn, get a sugar rush from a few eye-catching numbers, ride the emotional rollercoaster — and leave lighter… in your wallet.
It’s not investing. It’s a show. And the more often you visit, the more you lose.
🚫 Toxic Numbers. Part #1 — The “10,000% Return” Trap
“If you had bought Amazon 20 years ago, you’d be up over 10,000% today!” You’ve heard this line a hundred times.
Sure, Amazon is a great business. But it’s a terrible example for investors.
Because behind every “Amazon story,” there are a thousand companies that didn’t make it. That’s the survivorship bias no one likes to mention.
Those numbers don’t inspire discipline — they spark greed. They make people chase fantasies and jump from one shiny story to another.
Amazon and Tesla aren’t the villains here. The villains are the people who turned them into a marketing tool for financial gambling.
🚫 Toxic Numbers. Part #2 — “Missed Expectations by 0.01 Points!”
Quarterly reports and earnings calls have become a circus.
+0.01 — stock surges.
–0.01 — stock crashes 20%.
Or vice versa. 😂
This isn’t about business performance anymore. It’s about attention control.
Picture this: you’re a part owner of a local store. This quarter it made $1 million, next quarter $1.1 million. Did the value of your ownership suddenly drop or rise by 20%? Of course not.
But in the stock market, there’s a third crowd — analysts, traders, and talking heads — who decide whether it’s “good” or “bad.” And your portfolio moves based on their mood.
Now imagine holding that stock for 20 years. That’s 80 earnings calls. 80 chances to stress over noise that has nothing to do with reality.
Own 10 stocks? That’s 800 waves of unnecessary anxiety.
See the problem? It’s not about investing anymore — it’s about staying glued to the screen.
🚫 Toxic Numbers. Part #3 — Daily Gains and Losses
Open Yahoo Finance, CNBC, or any finance app — and it’s always the same:
“Stock A jumps 3%!”
“Stock B slides 4% after earnings!”
Every day, there’s a new winner and a new loser. Every headline gives you a tiny hit of dopamine.
Click once, click twice… and before you know it, you’ve traded something — for no real reason. Now be honest:
How often do you think about the market value of your local barber shop? Never.
Why? Because it lives outside the entertainment machine.
🎰 The Financial Casino
The “investment entertainment” world isn’t really about investing at all. It’s a hidden casino, wrapped in charts, apps, and data feeds.
Its goal isn’t to grow your wealth — it’s to keep you watching. To keep you reacting. To keep you hooked.
🧭 The Bottom Line
The real investment industry runs on patience. The entertainment version runs on your attention. Choose which one you want to feed.

The 10,000% Amazon line is the one I hear most. Still, the real takeaway for me is that business and cash flow keep compounding while the noise comes and goes, which is a pretty bullish setup for patient holders.
