Market Recap – Your Dividend-Powered Check-In

Hey there, hope you had a great long weekend — because Wall Street sure came back ready to roll.

The Dow ripped +740 points (up 1.78%) to 42,343, S&P 500 popped +118 points (+2.05%) to 5,921, and the Nasdaq soared +461 points (+2.47%) to 19,199. Small caps crushed it too — the Russell 2000 jumped +2.48%.

What sparked this bounce? A little relief on trade headlines (Trump’s EU tariffs got pushed to July), plus a solid consumer confidence number, a crypto bounce, and falling Treasury yields. In other words — good vibes all around.

📈 The Data That Matters

  • Consumer Confidence (May): 98.0 (beat 87.0 estimate) — Americans are feeling better about the economy.

  • Inflation Expectations (12-month): 6.5%, down from 7.0% — a little breathing room for those of us watching prices.

  • Durable Goods (April): Down -6.3% (better than feared) — but don’t get too excited, core orders still weak.

  • Home Prices (March): +4.1% YoY — steady, but not exactly a rocket ship.

  • Atlanta Fed GDPNow: Q2 GDP estimate lowered to +2.2% from +2.4%.

🏭 Company Highlights

Autos

  • Tesla: Euro sales tanked -49% in April. Elon says he’s back to “24/7 mode” (when is he not?).

  • Volvo: Cutting 3,000 jobs to cut costs.

  • Xiaomi: Big numbers — revenue +47% YoY, profits +64%.

  • BYD: Slashing EV prices up to -34% to stay competitive.

Retail/Consumer

  • Jack in the Box: Downgraded on weak sales — target cut in half.

  • KFC: Investing $2B to expand in the UK and Ireland (7,000+ new jobs).

  • BellRing Brands: Upgraded — top pick in Food.

Energy/Industrials

  • Gold miners (AEM, NEM, etc.) down as gold slips.

  • CMC: Upgraded for margin strength.

  • Cummins: Upgraded — less EPA risk = more power.

  • MSC Industrial: JPM raised target to $89.

Banks & Fintech

  • FICO: Under pressure after FHFA’s complaints.

  • Trade schools (LINC, UTI) rallied on Trump’s $3B proposal to shift funds from Harvard.

Healthcare

  • Pfizer: $1.25B China deal + $100M equity stake = potential $6B value.

  • Vertex: $4B buyback.

  • Thermo Fisher: Promising, but not quite matching Novo Nordisk.

Biotech

  • Biogen: Partnering on new CNS drugs.

  • Sanofi: FDA approval for Menquadfi vaccine for infants.

  • COVID vaccines: CDC drops routine vax recommendation for pregnant women & healthy kids (MRNA, PFE, NVAX, BNTX).

Transports

  • Railroads and airlines moving higher on solid travel demand.

Tech/AI

  • Nvidia earnings coming up — buckle up.

  • AI names (AVGO, ARM, SMCI) already running hot in anticipation.

🧠 What’s Next

1️⃣ All eyes on Nvidia earnings — can they keep this AI train running?

2️⃣ Fed minutes Wednesday, PCE inflation Friday — key for rate watchers.

3️⃣ Can the S&P crack 6,000 by Friday? That’s the number everyone’s watching.
